So, I'm with my family at Rosh Hashanah services on a glorious sunny California morning in Highland Park. We are at one of the oldest temples in the city. They don't even have parking. It's located on a residential street near Figueroa Street. This is the non-fasting part of the High Holidays, so during a break we stroll over to Fig. First we have lattes and avocado toast (I mean what else does one have for breakfast these days?) at the beautifully designed Civil Coffee, where I run into a fellow Member of the Tribe. It was later in the day and they had run out of sugary treats we had promised the kids. No worries! Walk a few more blocks to a San Francisco fave newly opened off of Fig, the fabulous Mr. Holmes Bakehouse...heaven.
Did you see what's happening across the street from the Americana? Start your morning right at the upcoming Eggslut, a total fave of the Grand Central Market. So delish! Next door and open now is Philz Coffee. I have yet to try it, but a friend who doesn't even drink coffee (mon dieu!) tasted some coffee mint concoction that blew her mind. Maybe catch a movie across the street, do a little shopping and head back over to the also newly opened Shake Shack. How's that for a day of delectable indulgence?!
What??? Can you believe it? Tour buses of folks coming to our local Whole Foods 365 to shop? Maybe, but to take photos predominately it appeared. As if it isn't crowded enough in that parking lot. Well, welcome to the neighborhood, folks. Gotta love it!
A neighborhood community center that is near and dear to me is the Silver Lake Independent Jewish Community Center. Last week I attended a fundraiser for the SIJCC at the Mack Sennett Studios called the Cabaret. Hilarious entertainment, lovely setting, wonderful people, delicious food from local eateries... a little bit of the Borscht Belt in our hood. The Center is open to all faiths and provides wonderful opportunities for entertainment, discussion, education, spiritual growth, yoga. My family has been involved for over a decade. Ask me about it if you are interested.
So excited that the owners of Forage are taking over the old Nicky D's space. It is a great space that is in desperate need of a makeover and has been sitting vacant for forever. Since the wood fire pizza ovens are staying, maybe we'll have some yummy Mozza style pies on the east side. I do find the pizza at All'Acqua in Atwater quite delicious and of that ilk. Thus, I'm interested in seeing what new creations will co-exist amongst the dough.
