DELIGHT DAY SPA

When I am in pain, and I know it is stress related, I run out to Delight Day Spa on Fletcher in Silver Lake. Tucked away in a hard to get mini-mall sandwiched alongside a realty company I’ve never heard of, at Thai restaurant my kid likes, a water supply store and Gus’ Tacos, is an urban oasis that hits the spot every time. They’ve always been available, and they’ve always been good. Go for the $40 Swedish-Thai combo, and tip your masseuse well because she deserves it. You’ll thank me later.

BLUE STAR DONUTS

BLUE STAR DONUTS

Not too many years ago, Los Angeles was famous for just one donut shop, albeit a giant landmark of a donut called Randy’s in Inglewood. The rest of the city seemed smattered with old school establishments like Winchell’s, and there was Bob’s in the original Farmer’s Market of course. Now, post cup-cake boom, Angeleno’s are getting creative with the gourmet donut, the vegan donut, the make your own creation donut. With several well known donut establishments on the east side, Blue Star has decided to get in on the mix. Originally from Portland with locations on the west side of LA, you can now get your gourmet, hand crafted, locally sourced fruit, from scratch brioche dough based fix with a perfectly paired coffee right here in Silver Lake.

JEWISH DELI WITH A TWIST

JEWISH DELI WITH A TWIST

When I moved to Silver Lake nearly a quarter century ago, I never would have imagined a Jewish Deli would open down the street from me at Sunset and Benton Way.  In fact, I don't recall anything worth writing home about on that corner. Twenty-four years later, I finally made my way over to Freedman's Deli.  I've gone twice for brunch and enjoyed a very unique latke in a triangular shape fashioned by waffle maker and the kippered salmon pancake, a Jewish twist on an LA fave of chicken and waffles.  The sweet savory combo...get it?  The late and dearly beloved Jonathan Gold raved about the brisket, so I need to go back for dinner.  The crowd is overwhelmingly hipster rather than Miami Beach, and the service is lackluster.  The setting, however, is lovely and the food divine.

LACMA FILM SERIES

Since 2007 the Los Angeles County Museum of Art has been collaborating with emerging and mid-career filmmakers to share the stories of the artists whose work is housed in their collections. Since then, this framework has developed into LACMA Productions. My dear friend, award-winning writer/director Lisanne Skyler, is a part of this enlightening series. I encourage you to visit LACMA for her engaging film about pioneering light and space artist Robert Irwin.

TABULA RASA

Tucked away in Thai Town, is a really cozy wine bar that makes a great meeting spot in the middle for east siders and friends a bit further west.  Which is exactly what I did a few weeks ago and really enjoyed myself. The vibe is casual, the service friendly, the burger outstanding, the music happening, albeit a bit loud for conversation. Grab a friend and enjoy shareable snacks, eclectic by-the-glass offerings & craft brews either at the bar or one of the perimeter tables.
